چکیده

The sternum is derived from a pair of vertical mesenchymal bands, called sternal bars, that develop ventrolaterally in the body wall. Chondrification occurs in these bars craniocaudally in the median plane to produce cartilaginous models of the manubrium, body segments (sternebrae), and the xiphoid process. Fusion of the bars at the inferior end of the sternum is sometimes incomplete (1, 3). This fusion defect can also be seen occasionally between the third and fourth body sternebrae. This imperfect union is known as midline sternal foramen. This condition is seen more frequently in the lower part of the sternum, as mentioned above, but may occur even in the manubrium (2, 4). It may be an isolated malformation or may be accompained by displacement of the heart or other midline abnormalities (2).

A large sternal foramen

Sternum is formed from bilateral mesenchymatous condensations, sternal plates, which begin in the dorsolateral region of body wall. These plates undergo chondrification, move ventrally towards each other from both sides, and they eventually fuse together across the midline in a craniocaudal direction. Mesosternum (body) ossifies from 4 sternebrae. Sternal foramen, of varying size and form, may ...

Relationship of Sternal Foramina to Vital Structures of the Chest: A Computed Tomographic Study

Sternal foramina are a well-known variant anatomy of the sternum and carry the risk of life-threatening complications like pneumothorax or even pericardial/cardial punction during sternal biopsy or acupuncture. There have been numerous studies numerous studies examinimg prevalence of sternal foramina, but the study of the exact anatomical relationship to intrathoracic structures has received li...

Morphological approach of the sternal foramen: an anatomic study and a short review of the literature.

BACKGROUND The sternal foramen (SF) constitutes a specific anatomic defect in sternum, indicating an impaired fusion of ossificated segments, which occurs either in an anatomical part of the sternum or in sternal joints. The aim of this article is to provide baseline statistical data about the variations of the SF, to present a short review of the relevant literature and to compare results with...

Experimental evaluation of midline dose calculation methods in In vivo dosimetry using anatomic thorax phantom

Background: In vivo dosimetry is a method for estimation of overall error in the delivered dose to the patients at the end of radiotherapy process. In this research, two methods for target dose calculation were evaluated on midline and central axis of photon beams in in vivo dosimetry of thorax fields. Materials and Methods: Entrance and exit doses for anterior and lateral fields of thorax were...

Cone beam computed tomography observations of the lingual foramina and their bony canals in the median region of the mandible.

PURPOSE To investigate by means of CBCT the presence of lingual foramina and their bony canals in the midline of the mandible and to describe their anatomical characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS CBCT examinations of 36 patients were carefully examined in the median region of the mandible in order to detect the lingual foramina and their corresponding vascular canals. Their presence, number...
